"FLASH FORWARD" T.V. Show and Book... A "MUST" POST!

FLASH FORWARD!

As you know, with the exception of "The Sunday Scoop" the Gang doesn't really stray from posting about much other than the book world.  Although this doesn't really qualify as a "stray" post, I am mostly going to talk about the show for now as I just started the book.

Now, with that out of the way, how many of you out there have seen FLASH FORWARD on ABC??  I had bought the book a few months ago having NO idea at all it was soon to be a TV show.  Well, after I bought it and brought it home, I did notice that it said on the cover "soon to be a TV show."  Anyway, I stored it away on the shelf with the other 100 books in the TBR pile.  Flash forward to yesterday. (HA! "flash forward"...that worked!)

I am on the phone with Jan, a partner in an investment firm that I work with.  I honestly forget how it came up, but she mentioned that she and her husband LOVE this new show that she thought was made by the creators of "Lost," called "Flash Forward."  I told her that I bought the book some time back and had intended to watch the show, but since I missed the first episode, I was just going to wait for the DVD to come out.  Besides, time is basically non existent for us as it is, to add a show to the mix now would just be  crazy.  Jan had somehow convinced me to just check it out online.

This morning, I woke up early and decided while I waited for the rest of the Gang to wake up, I'd go to www.hulu.com and check out an episode of "Flash Forward" for fun.  Well, that "check out" turned into  back to back non stop watching of all 4 episodes that have been shown so far.  By the way, the show is on Thursday nights at 8pm EST on ABC.  I was stunned at how unbelievable it was.  As a matter of fact, as I write this, I am watching them again so Mara and the girls can see them.

I put down "Leviathan" (not put away, just temporarily put down) to check out the book.  So far, there are some differences, but I haven't really got that far into it.  I will definitely continue reading it, but will just add it to the 2 or 3 other books I'm currently reading, of which one is still that "special" book for those of you I teased about it a few posts before ;o)  Ok, so I may be a bit evil with the teasing, but let's get back to the topic on hand here.

A bit about the show without giving any real spoilers away.  Keep in mind that from what I have read so far, some things, like time frames don't match between the book and show, but that's irrelevant until I read more and see exactly how much is different. Anyway, back to the show.  The opening is basically total chaos with cars flipped over, building on fire, people dead all over the place.  Soon, everyone realizes this was a global thing.  What happened is that for 2 minutes and 17 seconds (I think) at exactly the same time, everyone around the world blacks out.  Well, almost everyone.  Of those that did, which by episode 4 is the entire world besides a few people, some saw nothing and merely blacked out while everyone had a "flash forward" into the future.  A flash forward of their future.  Six months to be exact.

The show then starts to get into the FBI, revolving around an awesome main cast of characters, and how they try to figure out what happened.  I really won't say much else about it.  What I loved for one thing, was the way that the cast of main characters and their lives interact, whether it be now, or 6 months into the future.  Also, and hopefully you have seen a show before like what I am about to say, has SO much suspense in it that you can not even wait to see what happens in the next scene let alone the episode's ending.  I guarantee the last scene of each episode will make you do nothing other than immediately start the next week's show until you have seen all four.  Unfortunately, for the 5th, you have to wait until this coming Thursday.

It is not often that I find a show that I absolutely love and am hooked on.  Thanks Jan!  Over the last year or so, I can only remember 2 others that I got into and were a "must watch" each and every week.  They were "Life on Mars" which unfortunately didn't get picked up for a second season (the writers knew that in time to write in a pretty cool ending) and "Warehouse 13" which had an amazing ending to season 1 and promises for a really cool season 2.

So, if any of you have seen "Flash Forward" please join in here and let's make this a sort of "discussion" post. Obviously we can not talk about it without giving any spoilers away, so I won't spoil it in the initial post here, but once you read this and go into the comments, the gloves are off and no holds barred.  If you have not seen it, please go check it out and jump into the comments when you have.  If anyone gets involved here, we can keep going under this post every week until it gets filled up and start a second one when it is done.  If you guys have not seen it and take my advice, I guarantee we will go into another post talking about it.  Let's make a deal... If you have read the book, please do not discuss the book in the comments.  We can figure that one out later, but let's keep this one to the show.  I just figured it would be something fun for all of us to do.  Hopefully you will too.  I will put up a link to the official site in a second, but remember that even though you can watch the episodes there, goto hulu.com so you do not have to install anything into your computer.  On hulu, you can simply type in "flash forward" and with another click, watch the episodes.  I am going to put up the link to the site just so you can check it out.  Click HERE to go to the shows official page.

Hopefully, I have peaked your curiosity a bit and you will take my advice and check it out if you already have not.  I look forward to seeing what you guys think of it.

PLEASE ALSO CHECK OUT THE POST IMMEDIATELY UNDER THIS ONE ABOUT OUR NIGHT IN MANHATTAN WITH JAMES DASHNER, AUTHOR OF "THE MAZE RUNNER", THIS PAST THURSDAY.

  1. Am totally hooked on this show! Loved the first episode so much that I had to get my hands on the book! This is definitely a Must See show, and both the writing and the cast are amazing. I just hope they can live up to the high standard they've set with the first few episodes.

Wondering why certain people didn't have a flash forward, and looking forward to finding out what Charlie saw. And do you think people will be able to avoid their flash forward coming true, or will their future be set in stone?

  2. Alexia,

So glad you found this! First off, if you read the book already, please email me.

I definitely think the people who didn't have a flashforward are to be presumed dead by april 29th. Just my guess though. Although for dimitri's sake, I hope people can change their flashforward.
DYING to know what charlie's was!
I also hope they can change it for Mark's marriage sake. That would stink badly!

Mostly, I really want to know the obvious...who did it and why?

The only thing that concerns me is once they do discover who and why and hopefully catch them...then what? Show done? I hope not cause it is an awesome show.

Thanks for commenting! I wish I had a prize for you being the first! Hmmm..have you read any of the "septimus heap" series? If so, have you got "syren" yet? Just curious. Please let me know about that asap!

  6. A coworker of mine recommended watching the TV show. After the first 15 minutes, I was hooked! It has a great premise. When I saw the credits at the end of the first episode, I saw that it was based off of a novel, so I decided to check it out. It's on my TBR list but I don't think I will be reading it anytime soon. I'm afraid that I will get the storylines confused. But it's definitely a book I want to read.

  7. I really enjoy the show but I did not know it was based on a book. I love Joseph Fiennes and his whole family is a great theater family.

  8. I need to catch up on the show, I've recorded them and haven't had time to watch. I also didn't realize it was based on a book but now that I know I may just try to find a copy of the book and read it before I continue watching. I always prefer to read the book first. :)

  9. Hi Dave!

Meant to give Flash Forward a try, and as usual, between kids events, reading, blogging, and sleeping, I missed the show. I'll check it out on Hulu (that's where I catch up on everything anyway). The previews were great, thanks for reminding me to take a peek at the show. I've caught Warehouse 13 on Syfy because they replay all the time. Wish major channels would do that too.

  11. I really am enjoying this show a lot. I've watched Lost since it came on, and this show will hopefully be my fix for when it goes off. I've not read the book, and I'm not sure if I will, but the show definitely has promise. Great review.

  15. I would like Hulu more if they would make their content available to people outside the U.S. You guys get it for free because of the advertising that funds it, or so I understand, so why can't they sell advertising space to international companies and make the content available to everybody?

Um, yeah, sorry about the rant, it's just sour grapes that I hear all about these great new television series and don't have the opportunity (yet) to see them. But both the show and the book sound very interesting and thank you for pointing them out. :-)

  16. Oh yeah, I am so hooked on this show. Love the suspense and the little tidbits that come out during each episode. I just hope that we get some answers before the end of the season. Didn't realize that this was a book either, thanks for the heads up.

  17. Ok - I'll try it out. It's not often I like newer tv shows, but the idea is intriguing.

  19. This is so funny! I was watching Fast Forward and visiting your site as I read this post!

I have the book but haven't started reading it yet. Like you, the book hadn't quite registered even after I watched the first episode. Then I hunted for the book on my shelf, and have put it higher on my TBR pile.

So far, I really do like the show - in part because of the concept and partly because of the humor and these amazing actors. I love Numb3rs, so seeing Amita on Fast Forward is a plus!

  21. Flash Forward rivals my crazed obsession with 24.
    Well, not by that much.
But Flash Forward leaves me screaming at the last moment saying 'MAN, THAT WAS CRAZY!' , calling my sister every break to discuss, and updating my Facebook page with Flash Forward updates all throughout the show, basically ruining it for anyone who's not watching it :)

  22. I had no idea that the show was based on a book! Now I really am intrigued. I'm a sucker for movies and TV shows that were originally novels. I usually rush right out and read the book. I haven't seen any of the TV episodes yet, but now I might just check it out on Hulu. Thanks for the tip!
